Chai Kek is a small village located in the New Territories between Kowloon and the border with mainland China.. Village is no longer the correct term for Chai Kek and numerous other "villages"
in the New Territories. Once agricultural, the area is now more and more residential. There are still small market gardens but the graves of the old ones and the agricultural traditions are slowly disappearing beneath the dense semi tropical forest. Many Chinese are moving to areas like Chai Kek to escape the crowding and pollution of Hong Kong and Kowloon.
I spent a month photographing in Hong Kong and China and used Chai Kek as my base. I found it a blessed relief from tiring days in the gritty alleyways of Kowloon and a place of recovery after returning from the hustle and bustle of modern China.
